Tanorexia is a medical condition that describes tanners who are very much obsessed with sun tanning, tanning beds, or other tanning methods. It is derived from the two words tan’ and anorexia’. Anorexia is an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight while tanorexia is an obsessive desire to tan because those who have it perceive themselves as very pale which is unacceptable for them. It is like alcoholics or drug and cigarette addicts who cannot stop what they are doing by just understanding the consequences of it. Tanorexic people tend to tan more and more even after their skin is already dark which is dangerous as it may lead to a melanoma or other types of skin cancer.
According to skin experts, tanorexia is caused by the release of endorphin due to the skin’s exposure to the UV radiation from the sun or tanning booths. When the body is exposed to UV rays, it produces endorphin. Endorphin is a chemical in the brain that creates a feeling of euphoria. When the body releases more endorphin, they experience a tanning high like high in drugs. Thus, they need to take an endorphin-blocker to stop them from wanting to get more sun exposure. Frequent tanners who are given endorphin-blocker may experience withdrawal such as nausea, shakes, and dizziness but non-frequent tanners may not.
To the tan lovers, you should better control yourselves when it comes to too much sun tanning. Also refrain from exposing yourselves to tanning beds, tanning lamps or any other tanning methods which expose you to UV radiation as it is the major cause of this condition. If you think you are very pale and you need to darken your skin a little bit, there are many alternative ways to tan just like using self tanners. Heaps of self tanners have evolved since tanning became a phenomenon and these self tanning products are continuously improving to bring satisfaction to users.
There are various kinds of self tanners which include gel, oil, cream, mousse, lotion, spray, towelettes or tanning wipes, and many others. There are also gradual tanning solutions which are integrated in moisturizers or sunscreen to gradually tan your skin while using it every day. Lots of accessories also have emerged to minimize mess and enhance the application of these self tanner products.
So you better opt using self tanners than exposing yourself to UV rays!
